Annual Baby's Breath Seeds – Gypsophila elegans – Delicate Pink, White & Magenta Flowers for Cut Flowers & Borders.

🌸 A Cloud of Airy Color – The Classic Flower Filler

This Annual Baby's Breath (Gypsophila elegans) is the classic choice for adding a delicate, airy texture to the garden or floral arrangements. The plant produces a profusion of tiny, star-shaped flowers in a charming mix of pink, white, and magenta, held on fine, branching stems above grassy green foliage. It blooms quickly from seed and provides a stunning, cloud-like effect that softens the look of any garden. As a cut flower, it is the perfect filler for bouquets, adding volume and elegance. This fast-growing, low-maintenance annual thrives in poor soil and is a must-have for cut flower gardens and cottage-style borders.

🌱How to Plant & Grow

  • Light Requirements: Full sun (6+ hours of direct sun per day). Will tolerate light shade but will flower less intensely.
  • Soil Type:  Well-drained, poor to average soil. Prefers slightly alkaline to neutral pH. Excellent drainage is critical – does not tolerate waterlogged roots. Avoid rich, fertile soil (leads to floppy growth.
  • Germination Time: 7–14 days at 65–70°F (18–21°C). Darkness aids germination.
  • Days to Maturity: 50–60 days from seed to flower (one of the fastest annuals!).
  • Mature Height: 12–24 inches (1–2 feet). Spread: 10–12 inches.

📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions

  • Plant Spacing: Space plants 10 to 12 inches apart for good air circulation.
  • Seeding Density (Per Linear Foot): For a border row, sow 4–6 seeds per linear foot.
  • Seeding Density (Per Square Foot): For mass planting, sow 6–8 seeds per square foot.
  • Sowing Depth: ¼ inch (0.6 cm) deep. Cover seeds lightly with soil. (Seeds germinate best in darkness.)

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

Direct Sow (Recommended for all zones):

  • As soon as the soil is workable in early spring (typically March–May, depending on your zone), prepare a well-drained bed in full sun.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing seeds 2–3 inches apart in rows.
  • Water gently to keep soil moist until germination (7–14 days).
  • After 3–4 weeks, thin seedlings to 10–12 inches apart.

Start Indoors (For an earlier start):

  • Fill seed trays with moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep. Cover lightly with soil. (Seeds germinate best in darkness.)
  • Place the tray in a warm area (65–70°F). Keep soil moist.
  • Seedlings emerge in 7–14 days. Move to a bright location.
  • After 4–6 weeks, harden off seedlings over 5–7 days before transplanting outdoors.

 Succession Sowing (For continuous blooms):

  • Sow a new batch of seeds directly into the garden every 2–3 weeks.
  • This will ensure a continuous supply of fresh flowers for cutting from late spring through summer.

Ongoing Care:

  • Watering: Water regularly until established. Once mature, water only during prolonged dry spells. The plant is highly drought-tolerant. Do not overwater.
  • Fertilizing: Do not fertilize. Baby's Breath prefers poor soil and will produce more flowers when grown lean. Rich soil causes floppy, weak stems.
  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming.
  • Cutting: For the longest vase life, cut stems when about half of the flowers on the stem are open. Strip lower leaves and place in water immediately.
  • Overwintering: This is an annual. It will die back after the first frost. Collect seeds from dried seed heads for next year.
