Bi-Color Indian Blanket Seeds – Gaillardia pulchella – Bright Yellow & Magenta-Pink Flowers for Pollinator Gardens.

🌻 A Vibrant Burst of Yellow & Magenta

This Bi-Color Indian Blanket (Gaillardia pulchella) offers a stunning, vibrant display of color. The flowers feature bright yellow petal tips that transition into a deep magenta-pink/rose-red center, surrounding a textured dark reddish-brown disc. This tough, low-maintenance perennial blooms from late spring through fall and is a magnet for bees and butterflies, making it an essential plant for any pollinator garden. It thrives in poor, dry soils and requires very little care once established.

🌱How to Plant & Grow

  • Light Requirements: Full sun (6+ hours of direct sun per day). Tolerates light shade but will flower less intensely.
  • Soil Type: Well-drained, poor to average soil. Tolerates poor soil, sandy soil, and rocky soil. Excellent drainage is critical – does not tolerate waterlogged roots.
  • Germination Time: 14–21 days at 65–70°F (18–21°C). Darkness aids germination.
  • Days to Maturity:  100–120 days from seed to flower (first year blooms, but heavier bloom in year 2+).
  • Mature Height: 12–18 inches. Spread: 12–18 inches.

📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions

  • Plant Spacing: Space plants 12 to 15 inches apart.
  • Seeding Density (Per Square Foot): For mass planting, sow 4–6 seeds per square foot.
  • Sowing Depth: ¼ inch (0.6 cm) deep. Cover seeds lightly with soil.

Important Note:Gaillardia is a warm-season annual in colder zones, but can be grown as a short-lived perennial in zones 8–10. Seeds require darkness to germinate.

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

Start Indoors (Recommended for all zones):

  • Fill seed trays with moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep. Cover lightly with soil. (Seeds germinate best in darkness.)
  • Place the tray in a warm area (65–70°F). Keep soil moist.
  • Seedlings emerge in 14–21 days. Move to a bright location.
  • After 6–8 weeks, harden off seedlings over 5–7 days before transplanting outdoors.

Direct Sow in Spring (Best for Zones 8–10):

  • Wait until soil temperature reaches 60°F (15°C) and all frost danger has passed.
  • Prepare a well-drained bed in full sun. Remove weeds and loosen soil.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing seeds 2–3 inches apart in rows.
  • Water gently to avoid washing seeds away.
  • After 3–4 weeks, thin seedlings to 12–15 inches apart.

Fall Direct Sow (Zones 8–10):

  • In late fall (October–November), prepare a well-drained bed in full sun.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing seeds 2–3 inches apart.
  • Water once. Let the seeds overwinter in the ground.
  • Seeds will germinate in early spring (March–April). Thin seedlings to 12–15 inches apart after 4–6 weeks.

Ongoing Care:

  • Watering: Water regularly until established (first 4–6 weeks). Once mature, water only during prolonged dry spells. The plant is highly drought-tolerant.
  • Fertilizing: Do not fertilize. Gaillardia prefers poor soil and will produce more flowers when grown lean.
  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage a longer bloom period.
  • Dividing: Every 2–3 years, divide the plant in early spring or late fall to prevent overcrowding and maintain vigor.
  • Overwintering: In zones 3–7, treat as an annual. In zones 8–10, cut back foliage in late fall for winter protection.
