Blue Dwarf Ageratum Seeds – Ageratum houstonianum 'Blue Hawaii' – Vibrant Periwinkle Floss Flowers for Borders & Containers.

💜 Add a Cool, Soothing Pop of Blue to Your Garden

This Blue Dwarf Ageratum is a garden classic for a reason. Each bloom forms a textured, fringed pom-pom in an intense shade of periwinkle blue that contrasts beautifully with green foliage and warm-colored flowers like marigolds or zinnias. The compact size makes it extremely versatile – use it to edge walkways, fill in gaps in perennial beds, or plant in hanging baskets and patio containers for months of continuous color.

🌱How to Plant & Grow

  • Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade (4–6 hours of direct sun per day preferred, but tolerates light shade).
  • Soil Type: Well-drained, moderately fertile garden soil. Do not plant in heavy clay or standing water.
  • Germination Time: 7–14 days at 70–75°F (21–24°C). Do not cover seeds – they require light to germinate.
  • Days to Maturity: 60–75 days from seed to first bloom.
  • Mature Height: 8–10 inches. Spread: 6–8 inches.

📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions

  • Plant Spacing: When transplanting seedlings, space them 6 to 8 inches apart for a dense, carpet-like effect. For larger, individual plants, space 10 inches apart.
  • Seed Density (Per Linear Foot): For a continuous border row, sow 8–10 seeds per linear foot. For mass planting in beds or containers, sow 12–15 seeds per square foot.
  • Sowing Depth: Surface sow. Press seeds gently into the soil but do not cover with soil.

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

Start Indoors (Best for Northern & Mid-Atlantic Zones):

  • Fill a seed tray with moist, high-quality seed-starting mix.
  • Sprinkle seeds evenly on top of the soil. Do not cover.
  • Mist lightly with a spray bottle. Cover the tray with a clear plastic dome or plastic wrap to retain moisture.
  • Place in a warm location (70–75°F) with bright, indirect light.
  • Remove plastic once seedlings emerge (7–14 days). Keep soil consistently moist.    After the last frost date, harden off seedlings over 5–7 days before transplanting outdoors.

Direct Sow (Best for Southern Zones 8–10):

  • Wait until soil temperature reaches 60°F (15°C) and all frost danger has passed.
  • Prepare a weed-free garden bed with loose, well-drained soil.
  • Scatter seeds on the surface. Press down gently with your hand or a flat board. Water carefully with a fine spray (avoid washing away seeds).
  • After 3–4 weeks, thin seedlings to 6–8 inches apart.

Ongoing Care:

  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist but not soggy. During hot dry periods (e.g., Texas, California, Arizona), water twice per week.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10) once every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.
  • Deadheading: Remove spent blooms promptly to encourage continuous flowering through October.
  • Overwintering: In zones 9–10, Ageratum may survive as a short-lived perennial. In all other zones, treat as an annual.
