Deep Burgundy Coleus Seeds – Coleus scutellarioides – Red-Violet Leaves with Gold Edges & Lavender Spikes

🌿 Deep Burgundy Foliage with Lavender Flower Spikes

This Deep Burgundy Coleus (Coleus scutellarioides) offers a stunning display of deep burgundy to red-violet leaves with a thin, golden-yellow scalloped edge, held on dark red stems. In mid-summer, the plant produces multiple tall, upright flower spikes bearing delicate, tiny lavender-purple flowers that add vertical interest. Unlike many plants, Coleus provides a spectacular, continuous foliage display from spring through fall. It thrives in partial to full shade, making it the perfect choice for brightening up dark corners, planting under trees, or on the north side of a house. This fast-growing, easy-to-grow annual is a must-have for any shade garden.

🌱How to Plant & Grow

  • Light Requirements:  Partial shade to full shade (2–4 hours of direct sun per day or bright indirect light). Tolerates some morning sun but avoids intense afternoon heat.
  • Soil Type:  Well-drained, moist, moderately fertile soil. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH. Keep soil consistently moist.
  • Germination Time: 10–15 days at 70–75°F (21–24°C). Light aids germination.
  • Days to Maturity:60–80 days from seed to mature foliage.
  • Mature Height: 12–24 inches (1–2 feet). Spread: 12–18 inches

📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions

  • Plant Spacing:  Space plants 12 to 15 inches apart for full growth and good air circulation.
  • Seeding Density (Per Square Foot): For mass planting, sow 6–8 seeds per square foot.
  • Sowing Depth:  Surface sow. Press seeds gently into the soil but do not cover – they need light to germinate.

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

Start Indoors (Recommended for all zones):

  • Fill seed trays with moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
  • Sprinkle seeds on the soil surface. Do not cover. Light aids germination.
  • Mist lightly. Cover with a clear plastic dome to retain moisture.
  • Place in a warm area (70–75°F) with bright, indirect light.
  • Remove dome once seedlings emerge (10–15 days). Keep soil moist.
  • After 4–6 weeks, harden off seedlings over 5–7 days before transplanting outdoors.

Direct Sow (Best for Zones 8–10):

  • Wait until soil temperature reaches 60°F (15°C) and all frost danger has passed.
  • Prepare a well-drained, shaded bed. Remove weeds and loosen soil.
  • Scatter seeds on the soil surface. Press in gently. Do not cover.
  • Water carefully with a fine spray nozzle.
  • Keep soil moist. After 3–4 weeks, thin seedlings to 12–15 inches apart.

Ongoing Care:

  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist. Coleus does not tolerate dry conditions. Water during dry spells, especially in hot weather.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting time. Feed with a liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks during the growing season for best color.
  • Pinching: Pinch back the growing tips regularly to encourage bushy, compact growth.
  • Flower Removal: Pinch off any flower spikes that appear to keep the plant focused on foliage production.
  • Overwintering: Coleus is an annual. It will die back after the first frost. You can take cuttings in late summer to overwinter indoors.
