They are perfect for creating stunning vertical height along siding, fences, garden walls, and at the back of perennial borders. The large, coarse, lobed green leaves provide a lush, architectural backdrop that beautifully frames the dark, velvety flowers. Easy to grow, hardy, and spectacularly dramatic, these deep plum beauties will transform your garden into a captivating, gothic-English-style dreamscape.

🌱How to Plant & Grow

  • Light Requirements: Full sun (6+ hours of direct sun per day is essential for maximum height and abundant blooming). Tolerates very light shade but will produce fewer flowers.
  • Soil Type:  Well-drained, fertile, moderately moist soil. Hollyhocks prefer rich, loamy soil but will tolerate average garden soil. Avoid heavy, waterlogged clay.
  • Germination Time:  14–21 days at 65–70°F (18–21°C).
  • Days to Maturity:  100–120 days from seed to bloom. (Biennial habit: in the first year, they will grow foliage; in the second year, they will bloom. Allow them to self-seed for continuous yearly blooms).
  • Mature Height: 5–7 feet (60–84 inches). Spread: 18–24 inches.

📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions

  • Plant Spacing: Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart.
  • Seeding Density (Per Square Foot):  For mass planting, sow 2–3 seeds per square foot.
  • Sowing Depth: Surface sow or cover with a very thin dusting of soil (1/8 inch). Seeds need light to germinate, so do not bury them deeply.

Important Note: Hollyhocks are biennials. If you sow seeds this year, you will get a leafy base (rosette) this year, and they will bloom spectacularly the following summer. To ensure you have blooms every year, sow seeds two years in a row, or allow the plants to drop their seeds and self-sow naturally.

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

Start Indoors (Recommended for an earlier bloom in the second year):

  • Fill seed trays with moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
  • Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep. Cover very lightly with soil. Press down gently.
  • Place the tray in a bright, warm area (65–70°F). Keep the soil evenly moist.
  • Seedlings emerge in 14–21 days. Provide strong, direct light to prevent leggy growth.
  • After 6–8 weeks, gradually harden off the seedlings outdoors over 5–7 days before transplanting them into the garden.

Direct Sow (The easiest method, especially in fall)

  • Prepare a well-drained bed in full sun along a fence or at the back of a border. Remove weeds and loosen the soil deeply.
  • Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep, spacing seeds 3–4 inches apart in the row.
  • Water gently with a fine mist spray to avoid washing the seeds away. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination.
  • Once seedlings are 4–6 inches tall, thin them out, leaving only the strongest plants spaced 18–24 inches apart.

Ongoing Care:

  • Watering: Water regularly during dry spells, especially during the blooming period. Water deeply at the base of the plant to encourage strong root growth. Avoid overhead watering on the fuzzy leaves, as this can lead to hollyhock rust (a common fungal disease).
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring when new growth appears. Mulch around the base with compost to retain moisture and feed the soil.
  • Staking: Due to their extreme height, hollyhocks often need staking or support, especially in windy locations. Use a sturdy bamboo stake or tie them to a fence line.
  • Deadheading: & Seed Saving: Cut the main spent flower spikes down to the base after they finish blooming to encourage a possible second flush of smaller side blooms. To save seeds for next year, allow the last few spikes to dry completely, collect the papery seeds, and store them in a cool, dry place.
  • Overwintering: After the first frost, cut the dead stalks back to the ground. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of organic mulch over the root crown to protect it from harsh winter freezes in northern zones.
