Five-Spot Seeds – Nemophila maculata – Unique White & Purple-Spotted Flowers for Cool Season Ground Cover.

🌸 A Unique Spotted Pattern for Your Spring Garden

Five-Spot (Nemophila maculata) is one of the most delightful cool-season annuals you can grow. Its delicate, cup-shaped flowers feature crisp white petals, each ending in a distinct, deep purple-blue spot. This unique "five-spot" pattern creates a stunning, eye-catching display. The plant forms a dense, low-growing mat that quickly fills empty spaces, making it an excellent ground cover for spring gardens. It thrives in cool weather and will bloom continuously until the summer heat arrives. This charming native wildflower is easy to grow, attracts pollinators, and adds a unique, playful touch to any garden.

🌱How to Plant & Grow

  • Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade (4–6 hours of direct sun per day). Prefers cooler conditions and will tolerate light shade in hotter regions.
  • Soil Type: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH. Tolerates a range of soil types but dislikes waterlogged roots.
  • Germination Time: 7–21 days at 55–65°F (13–18°C). Darkness aids germination.
  • Days to Maturity: 50–70 days from seed to flower.
  • Mature Height: 6–12 inches. Spread: 6–12 inches.

📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions

  • Plant Spacing: Space plants 6 to 10 inches apart for a dense carpet effect.
  • Seeding Density (Per Square Foot): For mass planting, sow 8–12 seeds per square foot.
  • Sowing Depth: ¼ inch (0.6 cm) deep. Cover seeds lightly with soil. (Seeds germinate best in darkness.).

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

Direct Sow in Early Spring (Recommended for all zones):

  • As soon as the soil is workable in early spring (typically March–April, depending on your zone), prepare a well-drained bed in full sun to partial shade.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing seeds 1–2 inches apart.
  • Water gently to keep soil moist until germination (7–21 days).
  • After 3–4 weeks, thin seedlings to 6–10 inches apart.

Start Indoors (For an earlier start):

  • Fill seed trays with moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep. Cover lightly with soil. (Seeds germinate best in darkness.).
  • Place the tray in a cool area (55–65°F). Keep soil moist.
  • Seedlings emerge in 7–21 days. Move to a bright location.
  • After 4–6 weeks, harden off seedlings over 5–7 days before transplanting outdoors after the last frost.

Fall Direct Sow (Zones 8–10 only):

  • In late fall (October–November), prepare a well-drained bed.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing seeds 1–2 inches apart.
  • Water gently. Seeds will germinate in fall and overwinter as small seedlings, blooming in early spring.

Ongoing Care:

  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist during the growing season. Baby Blue Eyes does not tolerate dry conditions.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting time. Do not over-fertilize.
  • Deadheading: Not required, but removing spent flowers will encourage a longer bloom period.
  • Overwintering: In zones 8–10, fall-sown plants will bloom in early spring. In colder zones, the plant is treated as an annual and will die back after the first frost.
