Important Note: Blue Fescue is a hardy perennial. Do not plant outdoors until the soil temperature has consistently reached at least 60°F (15°C) and all danger of frost has completely passed. It will grow slowly in the first year, establishing a strong root system before maturing in the second year.
🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions
Start Indoors (Recommended for best results):
- Fill seed trays with moist, well-draining, fine-textured seed-starting mix
- Gently sprinkle seeds onto the surface of the soil. Do not cover them.
- Place the tray in a warm area (65–70°F) with bright, indirect light. Keep the soil evenly moist by misting from above or bottom-watering.
- Seedlings emerge in 14–21 days. Provide strong, direct sunlight immediately to prevent leggy growth.
- After 8–10 weeks, when the seedlings are 3–4 inches tall, gradually harden them off outdoors over 5–7 days before transplanting them into the garden, spacing them 8–12 inches apart.
Direct Sow (For Zones 7–8 only):
- Wait until the soil is warm and all frost danger has passed.
- Prepare a well-drained bed in full sun. Remove all weeds and loosen the soil deeply.

Ongoing Care:
- Watering: Water regularly during dry spells during the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, Blue Fescue is exceptionally drought-tolerant. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering will cause root rot.
- Fertilizing: Do not fertilize. This grass thrives in poor, lean soil. Over-fertilizing will encourage floppy, weak growth and fade the blue color.
- Pruning & Maintenance: In early spring, before new growth emerges, gently comb through the clumps with your gloved fingers to remove dead foliage, or trim the clumps back to 2–3 inches above the ground to refresh the mound. Do not cut into the crown of the plant.
- Dividing: Mature clumps can be divided in early spring every 2–3 years to maintain vigor, prevent the center from dying out, and propagate new plants.
- Overwintering: This is a hardy perennial. In Zones 4–8, it will remain evergreen or semi-evergreen in winter. In very cold zones, it may die back partially and re-emerge in spring.
