Important Note: Pampas Grass is a hardy perennial. Do not plant outdoors until the soil temperature has consistently reached at least 60°F (15°C) and all danger of frost has completely passed. In Zones 6 and below, it can be grown as a container plant and overwintered indoors in a cool, frost-free location. It will grow very slowly in the first year, establishing a strong root system before rapid growth in the second year.
🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions
Start Indoors (Recommended for best results and faster establishment):
- Fill seed trays with moist, well-draining, fine-textured seed-starting mix.
- Gently sprinkle seeds onto the surface of the soil. Do not cover them.
- Place the tray in a warm area (65–75°F) with bright, indirect light. Keep the soil evenly moist by misting from above or bottom-watering.
- Seedlings emerge in 14–30 days. Provide strong, direct sunlight immediately to prevent leggy growth.
- After 10–12 weeks, when the seedlings are 4–6 inches tall, gradually harden them off outdoors over 5–7 days before transplanting them into the garden, spacing them 4–5 feet apart.
Direct Sow (For Zones 8–11 only):
- Wait until the soil is warm and all frost danger has passed.
- Prepare a well-drained bed in full sun. Remove all weeds and loosen the soil deeply.

Ongoing Care:

- Fertilizing: Do not fertilize in the first year. In subsequent years, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage lush growth and abundant plume production.
- Pruning & Maintenance: In late winter or early spring, before new growth emerges, cut the old foliage back to 6–12 inches above the ground. This is essential to maintain a tidy clump and allow fresh, new growth to flourish. WARNING: The leaf edges are extremely sharp. Always wear heavy-duty gloves, long sleeves, and eye protection when pruning.
- Dividing: Mature clumps can be divided in early spring every 3–4 years to maintain vigor and propagate new plants.
- Overwintering: This is a hardy perennial. In Zones 7–11, it will die back to the ground in winter and re-emerge in spring. In Zones 6 and below, it can be grown in a large container and moved to a cool, frost-free garage or basement over winter.
