Pink Sweet Alyssum Seeds – Lobularia maritima – Fragrant Pastel Ground Cover for Borders, Hanging Baskets & Rock Gardens.

🌸 A Sweetly Scented Carpet of Rose-Pink Pastels

This Pink Sweet Alyssum variety brings a soft, romantic color to your garden while filling the air with a gentle honey-like fragrance. Unlike standard white alyssum, this pastel pink variety offers a unique visual appeal that pairs beautifully with purple, blue, or white flowers. The plants form a dense, low-growing mat of tiny blossoms that spill over edges and soften hardscapes. It is one of the easiest, most rewarding annuals you can grow from seed – perfect for both beginner and experienced gardeners.

🌱How to Plant & Grow

  • Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade (6+ hours of sun for best blooming; tolerates light shade but will flower less).
  • Soil Type: Well-drained, average to sandy soil. Does not tolerate heavy, waterlogged clay.
  • Germination Time: 8–15 days at 65–70°F (18–21°C). Do not cover seeds – they require light to germinate.
  • Days to Maturity: 40–55 days from seed to first bloom.
  • Mature Height: 4–6 inches. Spread: 6–12 inches.

📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions

  • Plant Spacing: Space plants 6 to 10 inches apart. For a dense, continuous carpet, space 6 inches apart.
  • Seeding Density (Per Linear Foot): For a border row, sow 6–8 seeds per linear foot.
  • Seeding Density (Per Square Foot): For large ground cover patches, sow 15–20 seeds per square foot.
  • Sowing Depth: Surface sow. Press seeds gently into the soil but do not cover with soil.

Note: Sweet Alyssum is frost-tolerant once established and can survive light freezes. In mild climates (Zones 8–10), it is often planted as a winter annual for blooms in January–March.

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

Start Indoors (Best for early blooms):

  • Fill a seed tray with moist seed-starting mix.
  • Sprinkle seeds evenly on the soil surface. Do not cover.
  • Mist lightly with water. Cover the tray with a clear plastic dome or plastic wrap.
  • Place in a bright, warm area (65–70°F). Seeds need light to germinate.
  • Remove the cover once seedlings emerge (8–15 days). Keep soil moist.
  • After 4–6 weeks, harden off seedlings over 5–7 days before transplanting outdoors.

Direct Sow (Easiest for zones 6–10):

  • Wait until all danger of frost has passed and soil is workable.
  • Prepare a well-drained bed or container. Remove weeds and loosen soil.
  • Scatter seeds on the surface. Press in gently with your hand or a flat board.
  • Water carefully with a fine spray nozzle.
  • Keep soil consistently moist for the first 3 weeks. Thin seedlings to 6–10 inches apart after 4 weeks.

Ongoing Care:

  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist. Do not let the soil dry out completely, as Alyssum has shallow roots.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once at planting time. Avoid over-fertilizing (leads to lots of leaves, few flowers).
  • Shearing (Mid-Summer Maintenance): In July or August, if plants become leggy or stop blooming, give them a light trim (shear back by 1–2 inches). This will trigger a fresh flush of growth and blooms that will last until frost.
  • Container Use: Pink Sweet Alyssum is excellent for hanging baskets and window boxes. It trails nicely over the edges.
