Purple Columbine Seeds – Aquilegia vulgaris – Deep Violet Flowers with Golden Yellow Stamens for Shade Gardens

🌸 Elegant Deep Purple Blooms for Shady Corners

This Purple Columbine (Aquilegia vulgaris) offers a stunning, elegant display of nodding flowers in deep, rich purple to violet with a prominent, bright golden-yellow stamen cluster. The flowers are held on slender stems above delicate, lacy blue-green foliage. This hardy perennial thrives in partial shade, making it the perfect choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and planting under trees. It blooms from late spring through early summer and is a magnet for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. It is also deer-resistant and adds a delicate, elegant touch to any garden.

🌱How to Plant & Grow

  • Light Requirements:  Partial shade (4–6 hours of direct sun per day or bright indirect light). Prefers partial shade but tolerates full sun in cooler climates.
  • Soil Type:   Well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH. Does not tolerate waterlogged roots.
  • Germination Time:30–60 days after cold stratification (see instructions below).
  • Days to Maturity:  120–150 days from seed to flower (first year blooms, but heavier bloom in year 2+).
  • Mature Height: 12–24 inches. Spread: 12–18 inches.

📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions

  • Plant Spacing:Space plants 12 to 15 inches apart.
  • Seeding Density (Per Square Foot):  For mass planting, sow 4–6 seeds per square foot.
  • Sowing Depth:Surface sow. Press seeds gently into the soil but do not cover – they need light to germinate.

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

Fall Direct Sow (Easiest – Recommended for all zones):

  • In late fall (September–November, after the first frost), prepare a well-drained bed in partial shade.
  • Scatter seeds on the soil surface. Press in gently. Do not cover.
  • Let the seeds overwinter in the ground. The cold, moist conditions will naturally stratify the seeds.
  • Seeds will germinate in early spring (April–May) once soil temperatures warm up.
  • Thin seedlings to 12–15 inches apart after 4–6 weeks.

Indoor Cold Stratification (For Controlled Germination):

  • Stratification Step: Place seeds in a damp paper towel or mix with moist sand inside a sealed plastic bag. Place the bag in your refrigerator (not freezer) for 30–60 days. Check periodically to ensure the sand/towel remains moist.
  •  Sowing Step: After 30–60 days, remove seeds from the refrigerator. Fill seed trays with moist seed-starting mix. Sprinkle seeds on the soil surface. Do not cover.
  • Germination Step: Place in a warm area (65–75°F) with bright light. Keep soil moist. Seeds will germinate in 30–60 days.
  • Transplant Step: After 6–8 weeks, harden off seedlings over 5–7 days before transplanting outdoors after the last frost.

Direct Sow in Spring (Requires artificial stratification):

  • Place seeds in a damp paper towel in a sealed plastic bag. Refrigerate for 30–60 days.
  • In early spring (April–May), after the last frost, prepare a well-drained bed in partial shade.
  • Scatter seeds on the soil surface. Press in gently. Do not cover.
  • Water carefully. Keep soil moist until seedlings emerge (30–60 days).
  • Thin seedlings to 12–15 inches apart after 4–6 weeks.

Ongoing Care:

  • Watering: Water regularly until established. Once mature, water once per week during dry periods. The plant is moderately drought-tolerant.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting time. Do not over-fertilize (can cause excessive leaf growth and fewer flowers).
  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage a longer bloom period.
  • Dividing: Every 3–4 years, divide the plant in early spring or late fall to prevent overcrowding and maintain vigor.
  • Overwintering: Cut back foliage to ground level in late fall. The plant will return from its root system in spring.
