Purple Globe Candytuft Seeds – Iberis umbellata – Dense Lavender-Violet Clusters for Borders & Rock Gardens

🌸 Dense Purple Clusters for Your Garden

This Purple Globe Candytuft (Iberis umbellata) offers a stunning, textured display of color. The dense, rounded clusters of tiny, vibrant lavender-purple to violet flowers create a beautiful, eye-catching display. The compact, bushy habit makes it perfect for rock gardens, border edges, and containers. It blooms continuously from early summer through fall and is a magnet for bees and butterflies, making it an essential plant for any pollinator garden. This easy-to-grow, low-maintenance annual is a must-have for any garden.

🌱How to Plant & Grow

  • Light Requirements:  Full sun (6+ hours of direct sun per day). Tolerates light shade but will flower less intensely.
  • Soil Type:  Well-drained, average to poor soil. Tolerates poor soil. Excellent drainage is critical – does not tolerate waterlogged roots.
  • Germination Time:10–20 days at 65–70°F (18–21°C). Darkness aids germination.
  • Days to Maturity:  50–60 days from seed to flower.
  • Mature Height: 8–12 inches. Spread: 8–10 inches.

📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions

  • Plant Spacing:Space plants 8 to 10 inches apart for full growth.
  • Seeding Density (Per Square Foot):  For mass planting, sow 6–10 seeds per square foot.
  • Sowing Depth: Surface sow. Press seeds gently into the soil but do not cover – they need light to germinate.

Important Note:Candytuft is a cool-season annual. It blooms best in spring and early summer. In mild climates (Zones 8–10), it can be sown in fall for winter and early spring blooms. Seeds require darkness to germinate.

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

Start Indoors (Recommended for all zones):

  • Fill seed trays with moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep. Cover lightly with soil. (Seeds germinate best in darkness.)
  • Place the tray in a warm area (65–70°F). Keep soil moist.
  • Seedlings emerge in 10–20 days. Move to a bright location.
  • After 4–6 weeks, harden off seedlings over 5–7 days before transplanting outdoors.

Direct Sow in Early Spring (Recommended for all zones):

  • As soon as the soil is workable in early spring (typically March–May, depending on your zone), prepare a well-drained bed in full sun.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing seeds 2–3 inches apart in rows.
  • Water gently to keep soil moist until germination (10–20 days).
  • After 3–4 weeks, thin seedlings to 8–10 inches apart.

Fall Direct Sow (Zones 8–10 only):

  • In late fall (October–November), prepare a well-drained bed in full sun.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing seeds 2–3 inches apart.
  • Water once. Let the seeds overwinter in the ground.
  • Seeds will germinate in early spring (March–April). Thin seedlings to 8–10 inches apart after 4–6 weeks.

Ongoing Care:

  • Watering: Water regularly until established. Once mature, water only during prolonged dry spells. The plant is moderately drought-tolerant.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting time. Do not over-fertilize.
  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage a longer bloom period.
  • Self-Sowing: Candytuft will readily self-sow. If you do not want it to spread, deadhead before seeds form.
  • Overwintering: In zones 8–10, fall-sown plants will bloom in early spring. In colder zones, the plant is treated as an annual and will die back after the first frost.
