Red Velvet Amaranth Seeds – Amaranthus cruentus – Giant Burgundy Flower Plumes for Dramatic Garden Backdrops & Dried Arrangements.

🌺 The King of the Summer Garden

Red Velvet Amaranth is an imposing, spectacular annual that commands attention. Its thick, upright flower spikes look like columns of deep burgundy velvet, creating a dramatic, architectural presence in the garden. Rising to 5–6 feet tall, it serves as an excellent backdrop for lower-growing flowers or as a centerpiece in large containers. The flowers are incredibly long-lasting, both in the garden and when cut and dried. Heat-loving and low-maintenance, this is one of the most rewarding tall annuals you can grow from seed.

🌱How to Plant & Grow

  • Light Requirements: Full sun (6+ hours of direct sun per day). Tolerates light shade but grows best in full sun.
  • Soil Type: Well-drained, average to fertile soil. Tolerates poor soil, sandy soil, and clay soil (with good drainage).
  • Germination Time: 7–14 days at 70–80°F (21–27°C). Darkness helps germination.
  • Days to Maturity: 70–90 days from seed to flower.
  • Mature Height: 48–72 inches (4–6 feet). Spread: 24–36 inches (2–3 feet).

📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions

  • Plant Spacing: Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart for full growth and good air circulation.
  • Seeding Density (Per Linear Foot): For a border row, sow 4–6 seeds per linear foot and thin later.
  • Seeding Density (Per Square Foot): For mass planting, sow 6–8 seeds per square foot.
  • Sowing Depth: ¼ inch (0.6 cm) deep. Cover seeds lightly with soil.

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

Start Indoors (Recommended for Zones 3–7):

  • Fill seed trays or small pots with moist seed-starting mix.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep (cover lightly with soil). Seeds germinate best in darkness.
  • Place the tray in a warm area (70–80°F). Keep soil moist but not soggy.
  • Seedlings emerge in 7–14 days. Move to a bright location.
  • After 4–6 weeks, harden off seedlings over 5–7 days before transplanting outdoors.

Direct Sow (Best for Zones 8–10):

  • Wait until soil temperature reaches 65°F (18°C) and all frost danger has passed.
  • Prepare a well-drained bed in full sun. Remove weeds and loosen soil.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing seeds 4–6 inches apart in rows.
  • Water gently to avoid washing seeds away.
  • After 3–4 weeks, thin seedlings to 18–24 inches apart.

Ongoing Care:

  • Watering: Water regularly until established (first 4 weeks). Once mature, water once per week during dry periods. The plant is drought-tolerant but produces best with consistent moisture.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting time. Avoid over-fertilizing (can cause excessive leaf growth and fewer flower plumes).
  • Support:Tall plants may need staking in windy areas. Use bamboo stakes or tomato cages to keep them upright.
  • Deadheading:Not necessary. Spent flowers can be left on the plant for visual interest or harvested for dried arrangements.
  • Harvesting (Cut Flowers): Cut flower plumes when they are fully colored but before they begin to fade. Strip lower leaves and place in water immediately.
  • Harvesting (Dried Flowers): Cut plumes as above. Hang them upside down in a warm, dry, dark, well-ventilated area for 2–3 weeks. They will hold their color and shape for years.
