Single Purple China Aster Seeds – Callistephus chinensis – Deep Violet Daisy-Like Blooms with Yellow Centers for Pollinators.

🌼 Classic Violet Daisy with a Golden Center

This Single Purple China Aster offers a classic, daisy-like bloom that is beloved by both gardeners and pollinators. Each flower features a deep purple-violet ring of petals surrounding a prominent, textured bright yellow center. Unlike fully double asters, the open center of this variety allows bees and butterflies to easily access pollen and nectar, making it an excellent choice for a pollinator-friendly garden. These charming flowers bloom from mid-summer until frost and make a lovely addition to garden borders or floral arrangements.

🌱How to Plant & Grow

  • Light Requirements: Full sun (6+ hours of direct sun per day). Will tolerate light shade but will flower less intensely.
  • Soil Type: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH. Does not tolerate heavy clay or waterlogged roots. (Important: Do not plant in soil where asters or other members of the daisy family have grown recently to avoid wilt disease.)
  • Germination Time: 7–14 days at 70–75°F (21–24°C). Darkness aids germination.
  • Days to Maturity: 90–120 days from seed to flower.
  • Mature Height: 18–30 inches (1.5–2.5 feet). Spread: 12–18 inches.

📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions

  • Plant Spacing: Space plants 12 to 15 inches apart for full growth and good air circulation.
  • Seeding Density (Per Linear Foot): For a row, sow 4–6 seeds per linear foot.
  • Seeding Density (Per Square Foot): For mass planting, sow 6–8 seeds per square foot.
  • Sowing Depth: ¼ inch (0.6 cm) deep. Cover seeds lightly with soil.

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

Start Indoors (Recommended for all zones):

  • Fill seed trays with moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep. Cover lightly with soil. (Seeds germinate best in darkness.)
  • Place the tray in a warm area (70–75°F). Keep soil moist.
  • Seedlings emerge in 7–14 days. Move to a bright location.
  • After 4–6 weeks, harden off seedlings over 5–7 days before transplanting outdoors.

Direct Sow (Best for Zones 8–10):

  • Wait until soil temperature reaches 60°F (15°C) and all frost danger has passed.
  • Prepare a well-drained bed in full sun. Remove weeds and loosen soil.
  • Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing seeds 2–3 inches apart in rows.
  • Water gently to avoid washing seeds away.
  • After 3–4 weeks, thin seedlings to 12–15 inches apart.

Ongoing Care:

  • Watering: Water regularly until established. Once mature, water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage. Wet leaves can lead to fungal diseases.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting time. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers (can cause excessive leaf growth and fewer flowers).
  • Deadheading: Remove spent blooms to encourage continuous blooming.
  • Staking: Large-flowered varieties may need staking to prevent stems from bending under the weight of the blooms.
  • Disease Prevention: Avoid overhead watering. Plant in a location with good air circulation. Do not plant in the same spot where asters have grown in the past 2–3 years to prevent wilt disease.
