Sweet William Catchfly Seeds – Silene armeria – Bright Magenta-Pink Clusters for Borders & Cottage Gardens

🌸   Charming Magenta-Pink Clusters for Your Garden

This Sweet William Catchfly (Silene armeria) offers a charming, delicate display of bright magenta-pink flowers. The small, five-petaled flowers with deeply notched petals are held in clusters on slender stems above grey-green foliage, creating an airy, delicate appearance. This easy-to-grow annual blooms continuously from late spring through summer and is a magnet for bees and butterflies, making it an essential plant for any pollinator garden. It is also deer-resistant and adds a charming, delicate touch to any garden.

🌱How to Plant & Grow

  • Light Requirements:Full sun (6+ hours of direct sun per day). Tolerates light shade but will flower less intensely.
  • Soil Type:Well-drained, average to poor soil. Tolerates poor soil, sandy soil. Excellent drainage is critical – does not tolerate waterlogged roots.
  • Germination Time: 7–14 days at 65–70°F (18–21°C). Light aids germination.
  • Days to Maturity:   50–60 days from seed to flower.
  • Mature Height:12–18 inches. Spread: 6–8 inches.

📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions

  • Plant Spacing:Space plants 6 to 8 inches apart.
  • Seeding Density (Per Square Foot):  For mass planting, sow 8–12 seeds per square foot.
  • Sowing Depth: Surface sow. Press seeds gently into the soil but do not cover – they need light to germinate.

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

Direct Sow in Early Spring (Recommended for all zones):

  • As soon as the soil is workable in early spring (typically March–May, depending on your zone), prepare a well-drained bed in full sun.
  • Scatter seeds on the soil surface. Press in gently. Do not cover. (Seeds germinate best in light.)
  • Water gently to keep soil moist until germination (7–14 days).
  • After 3–4 weeks, thin seedlings to 6–8 inches apart.

Fall Direct Sow (Zones 8–10 only):

  • In late fall (October–November), prepare a well-drained bed in full sun.
  • Scatter seeds on the soil surface. Press in gently. Do not cover.
  • Water once. Let the seeds overwinter in the ground.
  • Seeds will germinate in early spring (March–April). Thin seedlings to 6–8 inches apart after 4–6 weeks.

Ongoing Care:

  • Watering: Water regularly until established. Once mature, water only during prolonged dry spells. The plant is moderately drought-tolerant
  • Fertilizing: Do not fertilize. Sweet William Catchfly prefers poor soil and will produce more flowers when grown lean.
  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage a longer bloom period.
  • Self-Sowing: Sweet William Catchfly will readily self-sow. If you do not want it to spread, deadhead before seeds form.
  • Overwintering: In zones 8–10, fall-sown plants will bloom in early spring. In colder zones, the plant is treated as an annual and will die back after the first frost.
