Also known as Hare's-Tail Grass, this spectacular, compact ornamental grass produces dense, soft, fluffy, oval-shaped seed heads that closely resemble a bunny's tail. The plumes are a creamy-white to pale greenish-silver color, creating a whimsical, playful, and textural display that is simply irresistible from summer through early fall.
This charming grass forms neat, tidy, compact clumps of narrow, upright, bright green leaves, reaching 12–18 inches tall and 8–12 inches wide. The fluffy plumes are long-lasting, providing months of non-stop charm, and are also attractive to bees and small pollinators. Beyond the garden, the soft, fluffy plumes are highly prized by floral designers and crafters, as they dry beautifully and retain their fluffy texture and shape, making them a favorite for use in elegant, whimsical dried bouquets, wreaths, and floral art. Easy to grow, heat-loving, and endlessly charming, these bunny tail grasses are an absolute must-have for any container garden, whimsical landscape, or dried floral art project.

Important Note: Bunny Tail Grass is frost-tender. Do not plant outdoors until the soil temperature has consistently reached at least 60°F (15°C) and all danger of frost has completely passed. In cooler zones, it is a tender annual. In warm zones, it will naturalize as a hardy perennial. Due to the fine seeds, starting indoors is highly recommended for the best results.
🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions
Start Indoors (Highly Recommended for best results):
- Fill seed trays with moist, well-draining, fine-textured seed-starting mix.
- Gently sprinkle seeds onto the surface of the soil. Do not cover them.
- Place the tray in a warm area (65–70°F) with bright, indirect light. Keep the soil evenly moist by misting from above or bottom-watering.
- Seedlings emerge in 14–21 days. Provide strong, direct sunlight immediately to prevent leggy growth.
- After 8–10 weeks, when the seedlings are 3–4 inches tall, gradually harden them off outdoors over 5–7 days before transplanting them into the garden, containers, or window boxes.
Direct Sow (For Zones 9–11 only):
- Wait until the soil is warm and all frost danger has passed.
- Prepare a well-drained bed or container in full sun. Remove all weeds and loosen the soil deeply.
- Surface sow seeds (press gently into the soil), spacing them very thinly (or mix seeds with fine sand for easier handling).
- Water gently with a fine mist spray to avoid washing the seeds away. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination.
- Once seedlings are 3 inches tall, thin them out, leaving the strongest plants spaced 8–12 inches apart.
Ongoing Care:
- Watering: Water regularly during dry spells during the first growing season to establish a root system. Once established, Bunny Tail Grass is moderately drought-tolerant. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering will cause root rot.
- Fertilizing: Do not fertilize. This grass thrives in poor, lean soil. Over-fertilizing will encourage floppy, weak growth.
- Pruning & Maintenance: For annual use, simply pull the spent plants at the end of the season. For perennial use in warm zones, cut the old foliage back to 4–6 inches above the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.
- Harvesting for Dried Arrangements: Cut the plumes when they are fully fluffy and before they begin to shed. Hang them upside down in a cool, dry, dark place to dry for use in crafts and dried bouquets.
- Overwintering: In Zones 3-8, this is a tender annual. It will die back completely at the first hard frost. In Zones 9-11, it is a hardy perennial that will re-emerge in spring.
