Annual / Tender Perennial Purple Fountain Grass Seeds – Pennisetum setaceum – Arching Pink Plumes with Dark Burgundy Foliage.

🌾 Dramatic Dark Burgundy Foliage & Soft Pink Foxtail Plumes for Stunning Landscapes

Bring a touch of dramatic, luxurious elegance to your patio containers, garden beds, and landscapes with our Purple Fountain Grass (Pennisetum setaceum) Seeds. This spectacular ornamental grass produces dense, arching clumps of narrow, dark burgundy-purple leaves. The rich, moody foliage provides a stunning, dramatic backdrop for the spectacular, foxtail-like plumes in soft, dusty pink to mauve-purple. These feathery, arching plumes cascade gracefully above the dark foliage, creating a breathtaking, luxurious, and eye-catching display from summer through fall.

The arching plumes sway elegantly in even the slightest breeze, adding beautiful movement, sound, and texture to the garden. The contrast between the dark leaves and the soft pink plumes is truly mesmerizing. This versatile grass acts as a tender perennial in warmer US zones (9-11), returning year after year, while performing beautifully as a fast-growing summer annual in cooler zones (3-8). Its dramatic, fountain-like habit makes it an excellent choice for patio containers, hanging baskets, mixed perennial borders, and sweeping mass plantings. Easy to grow, heat-loving, and endlessly dramatic, these purple fountain grasses are an absolute must-have for any container garden, landscape, or modern garden design.

🌱How to Plant & Grow

  • Light Requirements:  Full sun (6–8+ hours of direct sun per day is essential for vigorous growth, deep burgundy color, and abundant plume production).
  • Soil Type:  Well-draining, average to poor, sandy or gravelly soil. Fountain Grass thrives in poor, dry, sandy, or rocky soil. Avoid heavy, waterlogged clay.
  • Germination Time: 14–28 days at 65–75°F (18–24°C). Seeds require light to germinate.
  • Days to Maturity: 90–120 days from seed to first plumes. (It will grow quickly and produce plumes in its first year when grown as an annual).
  • Mature Height: 24–36 inches (foliage); 36–48 inches (with plumes). Spread: 18–24 inches (clumping).

📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions

  • Plant Spacing: Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart for a dense, flowing border or container fill.
  • Seeding Density (Per Square Foot):  For mass planting or container filling, sow 3–4 seeds per square foot.
  • Sowing Depth: Surface sow. Press seeds gently into the soil but do not cover – they need light to germinate.

Important Note: Purple Fountain Grass is frost-tender. Do not plant outdoors until the soil temperature has consistently reached at least 60°F (15°C) and all danger of frost has completely passed. In cooler zones, it is a tender annual. In warm zones, it will naturalize as a hardy perennial. Due to the fine seeds, starting indoors is highly recommended for the best results.

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

Start Indoors (Highly Recommended for best results):

  • Fill seed trays with moist, well-draining, fine-textured seed-starting mix.
  • Gently sprinkle seeds onto the surface of the soil. Do not cover them.
  • Place the tray in a warm area (65–75°F) with bright, indirect light. Keep the soil evenly moist by misting from above or bottom-watering.
  • Seedlings emerge in 14–28 days. Provide strong, direct sunlight immediately to prevent leggy growth.
  • After 8–10 weeks, when the seedlings are 4–6 inches tall, gradually harden them off outdoors over 5–7 days before transplanting them into the garden, containers, or hanging baskets.

Direct Sow (For Zones 9–11 only):

  • Wait until the soil is warm and all frost danger has passed.
  • Prepare a well-drained bed or container in full sun. Remove all weeds and loosen the soil deeply.
  • Surface sow seeds (press gently into the soil), spacing them very thinly (or mix seeds with fine sand for easier handling).
  • Water gently with a fine mist spray to avoid washing the seeds away. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination.
  • Once seedlings are 4 inches tall, thin them out, leaving the strongest plants spaced 18–24 inches apart.

Ongoing Care:

  • Watering: Water regularly during dry spells during the first growing season to establish a root system. Once established, Purple Fountain Grass is moderately drought-tolerant. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering will cause root rot.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage lush growth and abundant plume production. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers.
  • Pruning & Maintenance: For annual use, simply pull the spent plants at the end of the season. For perennial use in warm zones, cut the old foliage back to 4–6 inches above the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges.
  • Overwintering: In Zones 3-8, this is a tender annual. It will die back completely at the first hard frost. In Zones 9-11, it is a hardy perennial that will re-emerge in spring. You can also dig up the plant, pot it, and overwinter it indoors in a bright, cool location.
