Tropical Milkweed Seeds – Asclepias curassavica – Red & Yellow Butterfly Flower for Monarchs & Pollinator Gardens.
🦋 A Fast-Blooming, Reliable Monarch Magnet
Tropical Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) is one of the most popular and easiest-to-grow milkweed varieties for butterfly gardens. Its vibrant red-orange flowers with bright yellow centers provide a stunning display from summer through fall. Unlike many native milkweed species that take years to establish and bloom, Tropical Milkweed grows quickly and produces flowers in its very first year from seed. This makes it an excellent choice for gardeners who want to attract Monarch butterflies quickly and reliably.
🌱How to Plant & Grow
- Light Requirements: Full sun (6+ hours of direct sun per day).
- Soil Type: Well-drained, average to fertile soil. Tolerates a wide range of soils but does not like waterlogged roots.
- Germination Time: 7–14 days at 70–75°F (21–24°C). Light aids germination.
-
Days to Maturity: 60–90 days from seed to flower.
- Mature Height: 24–48 inches (2–4 feet). Spread: 12–24 inches.
📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions
- Plant Spacing: Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart.
- Seeding Density (Per Square Foot): For mass planting, sow 4–6 seeds per square foot.
-
Sowing Depth: Surface sow. Press seeds gently into the soil but do not cover – they need light to germinate.

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions
Start Indoors (Recommended for all zones):
- Fill seed trays with moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
- Sprinkle seeds on the soil surface. Do not cover. Light aids germination.
- Mist lightly. Cover with a clear plastic dome to retain moisture.
- Place in a warm area (70–75°F) with bright, indirect light.
- Remove dome once seedlings emerge (7–14 days). Keep soil moist but not soggy.
- After 4–6 weeks, harden off seedlings over 5–7 days before transplanting outdoors.
Direct Sow (Best for Zones 8–10):
- Wait until soil temperature reaches 65°F (18°C) and all frost danger has passed.
- Prepare a well-drained bed in full sun. Remove weeds and loosen soil.
- Scatter seeds on the soil surface. Press in gently.
- Water carefully with a fine spray nozzle.
- After 3–4 weeks, thin seedlings to 12–18 inches apart.
Ongoing Care:
- Watering: Water regularly until established (first 4 weeks). Once mature, water once per week during dry periods. The plant is moderately drought-tolerant.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting time. Avoid over-fertilizing.
- Deadheading: Not required. The plant will continue to bloom without deadheading.
- Harvesting Seeds: After the flowers fade, seed pods will form. Let them dry on the plant, then collect the seeds for next year. Be careful – the seeds have fluffy white "parachutes" that blow away easily.
- Overwintering (Zones 8–10): Cut back the plant to 4–6 inches in late fall. It will regrow from the roots in spring
- Note for Monarch Conservation: In warm climates (Zones 8–10), Tropical Milkweed can cause Monarch caterpillars to overwinter instead of migrating. To help prevent this, cut the plant back to the ground in late fall.
