🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions
Start Indoors (Recommended for all zones):
- Fill seed trays with moist, well-draining seed-starting mix.
- Sprinkle seeds on the soil surface. Do not cover. Light aids germination.
- Mist lightly. Cover with a clear plastic dome to retain moisture.
- Place in a warm area (65–70°F) with bright, indirect light.
- Remove dome once seedlings emerge (14–30 days). Keep soil moist.
- After 6–8 weeks, harden off seedlings over 5–7 days before transplanting outdoors.
Direct Sow in Spring (Recommended for all zones):
- In spring, after the soil is workable, prepare a well-drained bed in full sun.
- Scatter seeds on the soil surface. Press in gently. Do not cover.
- Water carefully with a fine spray nozzle.
- Keep soil moist. After 4–6 weeks, thin seedlings to 12–15 inches apart.
- The plants will grow foliage in the first year and bloom the following spring.
Fall Direct Sow (Zones 8–10 only):
- In late fall (October–November), prepare a well-drained bed in full sun.
- Sow seeds ¼ inch deep, spacing seeds 2–3 inches apart.
- Water once. Let the seeds overwinter in the ground.
- Seeds will germinate in early spring (March–April). Thin seedlings to 12–15 inches apart after 4–6 weeks.
Ongoing Care:
- Watering: Water regularly until established. Once mature, water once per week during dry periods. The plant is moderately drought-tolerant.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting time. Do not over-fertilize (can cause excessive leaf growth and fewer flowers).
- Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage a longer bloom period.
- Overwintering: In colder zones (3–5), provide a light mulch layer in winter to protect the roots. In milder zones, no protection is needed.
- Self-Sowing: Dame's Rocket will readily self-sow. If you do not want it to spread, deadhead before seeds form.
