White Swamp Milkweed Seeds – Asclepias incarnata 'Ice Ballet' – Native White Butterfly Flower for Moist Gardens & Pollinators.
🌸 Elegant White Blooms for Moist Gardens
White Swamp Milkweed is a beautiful, native perennial that thrives in moist to wet soil conditions where many other plants struggle. Its clusters of star-shaped, pure white flowers add a touch of elegance to any garden and emit a sweet, vanilla-like fragrance. Like all milkweeds, it is a critical host plant for Monarch butterflies, providing essential food for their caterpillars and nectar for adult butterflies. This variety is perfect for rain gardens, pond edges, or low spots in the garden.
🌱How to Plant & Grow
- Light Requirements: Full sun to partial shade (4+ hours of direct sun per day).
- Soil Type: Moist, well-drained to wet soil. Tolerates clay soil and standing water. Does not tolerate dry, sandy soil.
- Germination Time: 14–30 days after cold stratification (see instructions below).
-
Days to Maturity: 120–150 days from seed to flower (first year blooms, but heavier bloom in year 2+).
- Mature Height: 36–60 inches (3–5 feet). Spread: 24–36 inches.
📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions
- Plant Spacing: Space plants 24 to 36 inches apart.
- Seeding Density (Per Square Foot): For mass planting, sow 4–6 seeds per square foot.
-
Sowing Depth: Surface sow. Press seeds gently into the soil but do not cover – they need light to germinate.

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions
Fall Direct Sow (Easiest – Recommended for all zones):
- In late fall (October–November, after the first frost), prepare a moist bed in full sun to partial shade.
- Scatter seeds on the soil surface. Press in gently. Do not cover.
- Let the seeds overwinter in the ground. The cold, moist conditions will naturally stratify the seeds.
- Seeds will germinate in early spring (April–May) once soil temperatures warm up.
- Thin seedlings to 24–36 inches apart after 4–6 weeks.
Indoor Cold Stratification (For Controlled Germination):
- Stratification Step: Place seeds in a damp paper towel or mix with moist sand inside a sealed plastic bag. Place the bag in your refrigerator (not freezer) for 30–60 days. Check periodically to ensure the sand/towel remains moist.
- Sowing Step: After 30–60 days, remove seeds from the refrigerator. Fill seed trays with moist seed-starting mix. Sprinkle seeds on the soil surface. Do not cover.
- Germination Step: Place in a warm area (65–75°F) with bright light. Keep soil moist. Seeds will germinate in 14–30 days.
- Transplant Step: After 6–8 weeks, harden off seedlings over 5–7 days before transplanting outdoors after the last frost.
Direct Sow in Spring (Requires artificial stratification):
- Place seeds in a damp paper towel in a sealed plastic bag. Refrigerate for 30–60 days.
- In early spring (April–May), after the last frost, prepare a moist bed.
- Scatter seeds on the soil surface. Press in gently. Do not cover.
- Water carefully. Keep soil moist until seedlings emerge (14–30 days).
- Thin seedlings to 24–36 inches apart after 4–6 weeks.
Ongoing Care:
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods. Unlike other milkweeds, Swamp Milkweed does not tolerate drought.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting time. Do not over-fertilize.
- Deadheading: After flowering, deadhead to prevent seed pods from splitting (if you want to control spreading). Leave some seed pods if you want to collect seeds or allow self-sowing.
- Overwintering: Cut back foliage to ground level in late fall. The plant will return from its root system in spring.
- Pests: Watch for aphids (the small insects that love milkweed). They do not harm the plant significantly. If necessary, spray off with a hose.
