Wild Bergamot Seeds – Monarda fistulosa – Compact Light Lavender Bee Balm for Pollinator Gardens & Herbal Tea.

🌸 Wild & Elegant – The Native Bee Balm with Earl Grey Scent

Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) is a stunning, native North American wildflower that brings a soft, natural elegance to the garden. The plant produces distinctive, shaggy, spiky flower heads in a beautiful light lavender-purple shade. The tubular flowers are a magnet for hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, making this one of the best plants for a pollinator-friendly garden. The foliage is strongly aromatic, smelling of Earl Grey tea (bergamot), and can be used to make delicious herbal tea. This species is more compact and drought-tolerant than other bee balms, making it an excellent choice for a wide range of garden settings.

🌱How to Plant & Grow

  • Light Requirements: Full sun (6+ hours of direct sun per day). Tolerates light shade but will flower less intensely.
  • Soil Type: Well-drained, average to dry soil. Tolerates poor soil and rocky soil. Excellent drainage is critical – does not tolerate waterlogged roots. This species is more drought-tolerant than Monarda didyma.
  • Germination Time: 14–30 days after cold stratification (see instructions below).
  • Days to Maturity:  120–150 days from seed to flower (first year blooms, but heavier bloom in year 2+).
  • Mature Height: 18–24 inches (1.5–2 feet). Spread: 12–18 inches.

📏Spacing & Seeding Instructions

  • Plant Spacing: Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart for full growth and good air circulation.
  • Seeding Density (Per Square Foot):  For mass planting, sow 4–6 seeds per square foot.
  • Sowing Depth: Surface sow. Press seeds gently into the soil but do not cover – they need light to germinate.

🧑🌾 Step-by-Step Planting Instructions

Fall Direct Sow (Easiest – Recommended for all zones):

  • In late fall (October–November, after the first frost), prepare a well-drained bed in full sun.
  • Scatter seeds on the soil surface. Press in gently. Do not cover.
  • Let the seeds overwinter in the ground. The cold, moist conditions will naturally stratify the seeds.
  • Seeds will germinate in early spring (April–May) once soil temperatures warm up.

Indoor Cold Stratification (For Controlled Germination):

  • Stratification Step: Place seeds in a damp paper towel or mix with moist sand inside a sealed plastic bag. Place the bag in your refrigerator (not freezer) for 30–60 days. Check periodically to ensure the sand/towel remains moist.
  • Sowing Step: After 30–60 days, remove seeds from the refrigerator. Fill seed trays with moist seed-starting mix. Sprinkle seeds on the soil surface. Do not cover.
  • Germination Step: Place in a warm area (65–75°F) with bright light. Keep soil moist. Seeds will germinate in 14–30 days.
  • Transplant Step: After 6–8 weeks, harden off seedlings over 5–7 days before transplanting outdoors after the last frost.

Direct Sow in Spring (Requires artificial stratification):

  • Place seeds in a damp paper towel in a sealed plastic bag. Refrigerate for 30–60 days.
  • In early spring (April–May), after the last frost, prepare a well-drained bed.
  • Scatter seeds on the soil surface. Press in gently. Do not cover.
  • Water carefully. Keep soil moist until seedlings emerge (14–30 days).
  • Thin seedlings to 12–18 inches apart after 4–6 weeks.

Ongoing Care:

  • Watering: Water regularly until established (first 4–6 weeks). Once mature, water only during prolonged dry spells. This species is drought-tolerant once established.
  • Fertilizing: Do not fertilize. Wild Bergamot prefers poor soil and will produce more flowers when grown lean. Rich soil can cause excessive leaf growth and floppy stems.
  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage a longer bloom period and prevent self-sowing if desired.
  • Dividing: Every 2–3 years, divide the plant in early spring or late fall to prevent overcrowding and maintain vigor.
  • Herbal Tea Harvest: Harvest fresh leaves anytime during the growing season. Dry them for later use. The leaves have a strong, pleasant bergamot scent.
